Importance of Training

Importance of Training and Why
Productivity of labor is one of the most talked about topics in management and especially operation management. It is important because without getting a good foundation, it is very hard to build the strength of labor to improve its’ productivity. To be effective and efficient, labor need to be train the methods, skills and knowledge that will enhance their work process. Training is also a form of motivator to the labor. According to Susan McClelland (2002), training is not just important to build up productivity but also build their motivation by letting them know how important their job is. Of course the more important the employees perceive the job, there are more attention given by the management including the training. When employees feel they are important, their job is important and management giving attention to them it will results also in low turnover, low down morale, low dissatisfaction, and low absenteeism. All these factors will accumulate to results in improvement of labor productivity in the organization. Training can be seen as a platform for employees to develop and grow in the organization. Feeling of belonging to the organization can be cultivated if the employees career development is being made.

Training also creates sustainability of knowledge in long term for all labor. Training is retention of knowledge, skills and abilities in an organization. A good proverb taken by Susan McClelland (2002) is by teaching a person to catch a fish rather than give him fish can help him to have sufficient food for rest of his life. The meaning is that the organization cannot simply spoon-feed its labor force but rather looking for alternative ways to create independencies because in long term organization can build up a strong and proactive employee. Training also play role in retention of this important and strategic knowledge, expertise and skills from extinct in the end by giving and giving these asset to its employees. According to Annmarie Edwards (2007), there is importance of life-long learning in organization to sustain its competitiveness in the market.

Adaptability to changes in surrounding and business environments is essential for business to survive and sustain. Organization from time to time may need to change for better and adapt to their requirement and needs of the market force. Customers now are more demanding; the needs of customers are unique, trend is changing fast, competition force is big between all business competitors and knowledge and technology is getting better. Organization cannot grow if their employee is constraint by old methods of thinking and old inefficient way of doing things. That is why the importance of training is there to do behavior modification and skills enhancement of employees to suit current environment. For example, previously a factory may produce bottling of tomato ketchup manually but with enhancement by using machinery through capital investment, there is need to train these workers to understand the new process. Technology changes such as information technology needs to be disseminated and trained accordingly to all employees in order to ensure smooth transition of the organization, good grasp of the knowledge and better implementation to see its main objective accomplish.

Training is also important to close the skills gap. Why? Our education system gives birth to diverse group of peoples. We may have large pools of graduates but all may comes from different educational background, conceptual understanding, social skills and knowledge. The variability of skills and understanding is not good if we want to create a team of qualified, strong and capable workforce. By training, we can close the skills gap between what job market offer to the organization and what the actual job expectation is to the new workers. Training is also important to put the new workers a good pillar to survive in the organization and understand their job and expectation from the management better.

Changing of workforce composition, diversity and competition in global economy also highlighted importance of training. There are more and more women entering the labor market lower glass ceiling which enables women to climb the corporate ladder, higher participation of people with disabilities, higher composition of older workers due to low birth rate and longer retirement age limit, people with special condition and foreign labor. This requires the function of training to equip the people who join in the market and training to increase the awareness of normal workers surrounding them. Developmental programs must be fairly distributed to these categories of people for mutual benefits and mutual growth in the organization.

In conclusion, training is important to organization to ensure the is retention of skills, to ensure there is closing gap between what labor market offer and what organization or customer expect, to streamline the workforce to face global competitive challenges, understanding of diversity and most significant is a platform for career development and increase of employees morale to perform.
